Fieldeng's core tools work offline: you can calculate, capture measurements, and save field records without an account or an internet connection. Your saved work stays in local app storage unless you export it or your operating system backs it up.

Offline tools, with some connected features

Offline does not mean the app never connects to the internet. When a connection is available, online maps download map data, address search sends the words you search for, and the app checks for updates. The camera text-recognition library can also send technical information to Google about how it runs. This can happen even though recognition itself takes place on your phone.

Those services can receive information such as your IP address, the map area you view, address searches, app-installation identifiers, and technical usage or performance information. They do not receive your saved field records as part of these requests. Fieldeng does not require an account, run a server for your core field records, or include advertising. The sections below explain what each feature sends and why.

What stays on this device

Calculations, measurements, locations, assets, projects, forms, photos you attach, presets, and drafts are stored in the app's local storage. Fieldeng does not upload your saved field records to an NPC Inc. server. Data remains until you delete it or remove the app's storage. Device backups and exports are described below.

Location and nearby devices

With your permission, Fieldeng uses device location to position the map and attach coordinates to records. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular tools read nearby radio information, such as network identifiers and signal strength, for measurements you choose to capture. Saved observations remain in local app storage.

Camera

The meter reader processes camera images on this device. You confirm every suggested reading before it fills a field. Camera frames and OCR results are not sent to Google for recognition. Photos you choose to save remain in local app storage. ML Kit diagnostics are described below.

Microphone

Voice entry uses the operating system's on-device speech recognizer when it is available. If that recognizer is missing, Fieldeng does not send audio to a network fallback. Installing a speech language model can require a download from your operating system's provider.

Maps and address search

Online streets use Protomaps archives hosted by Protomaps or Source Cooperative. Map fonts load from OpenFreeMap. These providers receive your IP address and requests needed to display the map. Map-data requests can reveal the area you are viewing. When the map follows your device location, that area can correspond to where you are; a detailed view may reveal a smaller area than a city-level view. Displaying your GPS position locally does not itself upload your saved location records.

Address search sends the text you enter to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service so it can find matching places. The service receives your search text and IP address. If you search for your own address or a work site, that query can reveal the place you mean. These services do not receive your saved records, photos, or notes as part of map loading or address search. Offline street coverage depends on the map data available on your device; address search needs an internet connection.

Network tools and exports

Network tests send requests to the hosts and services you choose, including local-network equipment and DNS services. A destination can receive your network address and the test traffic. If you export or share records, or open coordinates in another map app, the selected destination receives that content and handles it under its own privacy policy. Local-network test traffic uses the selected protocol. Online map, address-search, and app-update requests use HTTPS.

App updates

The app checks Expo's update service for compatible app updates when it starts. Expo receives your IP address, an app-installation client identifier, and app/update information needed to deliver the right update. An installation identifier identifies an installation of the app; it is not an account you create with Fieldeng. Saved field records are not included in those update checks.

ML Kit diagnostics

The camera meter reader uses Google's ML Kit Text Recognition library to recognize text on your phone. Google documents that this library collects technical information for diagnostics and usage analytics: device model and operating system, app version, an identifier for the app installation, how long recognition takes, image format and dimensions, input/output sizes, feature-use events, and error codes. For example, it can report that a recognition feature ran or encountered an error. This is separate from sending a photo or the recognized text to Google for recognition.

Local recognition therefore does not mean there is no SDK data collection. Google documents HTTPS encryption for these diagnostics. See Google's ML Kit data disclosure and Google's privacy policy. Fieldeng does not include a separate product-analytics service.

Your choices

You can use core calculations and local records without a connection. Camera and location access are controlled through Android permissions. You can choose whether to use address search, network tests, or exports. These choices do not amount to a separate switch for every SDK diagnostic or update request. Without internet access, online maps, address search, updates, and other network requests cannot complete; locally available tools and map data can still be used.

Storage, backup, and deletion

Local app data uses the operating system's app storage protections. Depending on your device settings and platform behavior, app data can be included in operating-system backups or device transfers. Manage those copies through your device or backup provider. Settings in Fieldeng can clear saved records. To remove local app storage, use Android Settings to clear the app's storage. Uninstalling removes local app storage, but backups and exported copies can remain. Delete exports wherever you saved or shared them. NPC Inc. does not operate an account or server-side field-record store to delete. Third-party service logs and diagnostics follow the providers' retention and deletion policies.

Website

The website and documentation hosting provider receives request metadata, such as IP address, requested URL, and browser information, to deliver and protect the pages. The website stores your appearance preference in your browser. It does not require an account or use an advertising service.

Closed testing and feedback

The test guide at fieldeng.app/test currently has no signup form. Its personal checklist is not submitted or stored by Fieldeng. Visiting the page does not enroll you in a Google Play test or subscribe you to reminders.

If you email us about testing, we receive your email address, message, and any attachments you choose to send. We use them to answer your questions, coordinate participation you request, and investigate feedback. Mail providers process those messages to deliver and store them. Do not send passwords, payment information, sensitive field records, or unredacted site details.

We retain identifiable test correspondence and private coordination records for the duration of the test and up to 90 days after it ends, then delete them. We may keep feedback after removing identifying details to track product fixes. To request deletion or stop follow-up contact, email hello@fieldeng.app. This does not change your Google Group membership or Google Play enrollment; manage those directly with Google, whose services follow their own policies. Any future application form or optional reminders will explain their data use before you submit or subscribe.
